“You are shareholders in our democratic set-up,” President Ghani tells new MPs

KABUL: President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani met with successful Wolesi Jirga  candidates at the presidential palace late on Tuesday night, a statement from the presidential press office said yesterday.
According to the statement, at the outset state minister for parliemnetary affairs Farooq Wardak said the new Parliament members were willing to work for a national goal and start a new chapter in the country’s parliament.
Representing of others, Abdul Qader Qalatawall, Dr. Khadija Elham, Gul Rahman Hamdard, Eng. Mir Haidar Afzali, Shafiqa Sakha Youlchi, Malalai Ishaqzai, Nikbakht Fahimi, Eng. Helmand Helmand, Homayoun Shaheedzada, Ustad Hanif, Ustad Ulfati and Abdul Shokor Waqef Hakimi spoke and asked the president to inaugurate the new parliament.
They also asked for announcement of the parliamentary election results of Kabul and Maidan Wardak provinces as well as for Kuchis, calling generation changes of MPs as one of the main characteristics of the 17th legislative term of the parliament. They also asked for coordination and cooperation among the three forces of government and praised government and Prsident Ghani’s programs for peace, security and self-reliance in the country.
Congratulating new MPs, president Ghani said that anything ignoring the constitution amounts to a coup and is unacceptable to the nation.
“Six months ago, I was waiting for this day when the government and key national institutions stand completed,” President Ghani commented during the overnight meeting.
President Ghani said he was ready to open the new Wolesi Jirga’s session. “You are shareholders in our democratic set-up. We are not in competition, but accountable to the nation and partners in law enforcement.”
He added the lower house should not be changed into a breeding ground for extremism. “We should resolve our issues together. Mutual respect is necessary between the executive and legislative branches.”
President Ghani called peace, the Consultative Loya Jirga and the presidential elections as three important issues. He said the participation of lawmakers, particularly Wolesi Jirga members would be vital in the planned Loya Jirga.
