When Soviet Union withdrew its troops from Afghanistan in 1989, the then government of Afghanistan was collapsed. Now, it is said if US withdraws its troop completely from Afghanistan, the current government of Afghanistan will collapse. If we review the years between 1988 – 1992, it is clarified that neither Dr. Najib’s regime was toppled after the Soviet Union’s troop withdrawal nor the current government will collapse with the US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.
It was said that with Soviet troop withdrawal from Afghanistan, Dr Najib’s regime would collapse in few days, but the government continued to rule the country for three straight years. There were a couple of reasons why Dr Najib’s regime did not collapse soon: one of the main reasons was the Soviet Union’s continued cooperation with the then Afghan government.
From early 1989 – late 1991, Soviet Union used to provide $300 million to Dr Najib’s regime on regular basis. This assistance helped the Afghan government to fight against mujahidin for a couple of years. But, with the collapse of Marxism regime in Soviet Union, the country stopped to assist the then Afghan government and cut its relation with Afghanistan.
On the other hand, US stopped providing assistance to mujahidin.
This made Dr Najim resign and sought asylum at UN office in Kabul. With resignation of Dr Najib, mujahidin took the power and later a civil war started between different groups of mujahidin in the country.
Soviet Union had entered Afghanistan without any agreement of the then government of Afghanistan, but US has entered Afghanistan based on an agreement of the UN to fight terrorism; therefore, the US would like to responsibly withdraw its troops from Afghanistan.
US will never repeat the mistake the then Soviet Union made by irresponsibly withdrawing troops from Afghanistan. With stopping assistance to Dr Najib’s regime by Soviet Union and collapsing the Afghan regime, civil war started in Afghanistan. In the meantime, various terrorist groups particularly al Qaeda entered Afghanistan. Now, if US leaves Afghanistan as it did in 1990s, we can say that more terrorist groups such as al Qaeda, Daesh and other will start operating in Afghanistan and will pose serious threats to the region and world.
I think not only US but the whole world are responsible to find a way for solution of Afghanistan’s current dispute as the security in Afghanistan depends on the security and stability of the whole world. Three years back when US started negotiations led by Zalmay Khalilzad with Taliban, the group agreed on all issues which are important for the US government. What is most important in negotiations between US and Taliban is that the Afghan soil won’t be used against the US. A question is now created when Taliban and US agreed on all issues, whey they do not reach a final agreement or conclusion?
As I pointed, US is responsible to find a way for solution of Afghanistan’s current dispute. It is good that Afghanistan should not be once again a hub for international terrorists. The Afghan soil has been always used for the interest of US and it’s only Afghans who are the victims of yesterday and today’s war on terror. Our Afghan security forces have bravely fought international terrorism now and then and will defend the country after the US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.
The US continued support to Afghan National Defense and Security Forces is not that they are defending their country but the ANDSF are fighting international terrorism posing threats to not only the region but the whole world. Therefore, we can say that it is the responsibility of US to continue its cooperation with ANDSF.
