KABUL: NATO’s Senior Civilian Representative (SCR) Ambassador Stefano Pontecorvo in series of tweets yesterday said that a surge in violence by Taliban is unacceptable and the movement must reduce attacks. He made the remarks during a meeting with First Vice-President Amrullah Saleh on Monday.
“Always a pleasure to meet Amrullah Saleh. We discussed the Afghan peace process, including unacceptable high levels of violence by the Taliban. The Taliban must reduce now and show commitment to finally settle the conflict through political means,” he tweeted.
He also emphasized the need for Afghanistan’s unified approach as it entered intra-Afghan negotiations with the Taliban.
“Disunity would only strengthen the militants. Now it is time to rally all efforts behind a dignified peace for all, preserving gains of the past 19 years,” the NATO SCR tweeted. Meanwhile in response to his tweet, the first Vice President retweeted saying: “Peace is a pan Afghan desire. Taliban’s insistence on continuation of violence will bring them further shame & condemnation.”
