Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar has approached. It is a distinguished Islamic month in which it is obligatory for every Muslim to keep fast during the whole day, avoid committing sins as far as possible and help the poor people. Holy Quran, the sacred book of Muslims got completed in Ramadan which makes the month especially distinct for the Muslim world.
During the blessed month of Ramadan, Muslims all over the world abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs during the daylight hours. As a time to purify the soul, refocus attention on God, and practice self-sacrifice, Ramadan is much more than just not eating and drinking.
The purpose of Ramadan is reminding the people and the ruler of their responsibilities and roles in a society as human beings. In Afghanistan, where people are in dire need of peace and justice, there is much need to spread the real message of Ramadan.
A civil society void of violence will be formed when people of all races and religions treat one another with the spirit of brotherhood on the basis of being human. It is possible when individuals show tolerance and patience towards one another.
President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani in a video message on the occasion of Ramadan reiterated his call on the Taliban to respond to the demand of Afghans for peace and reconciliation which was reflected at the grand council of 3,200 representatives from around the country.
He said that Ramadhan is a month of peace and reconciliation.  “I once again call on the Taliban to respect this holy month and address the demand of Afghans for peace and reconciliation which was reflected at the Grand Consultative Jirga for Peace,” President Ghani said.
The message of Ramadan for warring parties is to, at least, humanize the war if not quit it. They must not kill the innocent civilians, especially women and children, the wounded in action, detainees or hostages. In another item, humanitarian law, which stems from religious guidelines, must be abided by. People’s natural rights and dignity, bestowed by their Creator, must be protected under any circumstances. The radical groups are to minimize civilian casualties.
During this holy month, the people should treat each other very well and brotherly. Violating one’s rights and dignity anytime, especially in this month, will not be forgiven. It goes without saying that religious tenets have strong impact on social and political life. One’s beliefs will be revealed through their deeds in collective life.
Taliban should accept Afghans call for ceasefire and peace in the country during this holy month. They are required to give up war and violence as well as targeting their own compatriots in difference provinces, rather promote tolerance, cohesion and peaceful life in the country.
Let’s take bold steps for the welfare and protection of Afghan civilians who have been suffering from war and conflict for nearly four decades. All parties should respect this month for the sake of stability, tranquility, peace and reconstruction of Afghanistan. Wishing the brave and Muslim Afghan nation and the world Muslims a peaceful Ramadan.
