Public uprising against Taliban expanding in Afghanistan

By: Suraya Raiszada

Following surge in Taliban’s attacks in various provinces and districts of Afghanistan, thousands of people have declared their support from Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF), took arms and stood against Taliban fighters to defend and protect their areas. A number of the country’s security organs and military experts believe that recent uprising is a shield against Taliban attacks in the country.
Taliban has recently increased their attacks against the country’s defense and security forces . Currently, fighting is ongoing in 20 provinces of Afghanistan. Recent surge in Taliban attacks in dozens of the country’s districts has resulted in people’s uprising, but there’s concern over management of uprisings post the war.
Afghanistan Ministry of Defense (MoD) is supporting people’s increasing uprising against the Taliban fighters in various parts of the country, but it says effort is underway to manage the uprising. “People’s uprising forces have no criminal background and have only taken arms to support ANDSF in fight against Taliban fighters,” said Fawad Aman, a spokesperson to the ministry of defense.
Aman said that the uprising forces have taken arms to defend the country, which was considered a good step, adding that most of the uprising forces were educated and youth working in government and private institutions.
He further said that a number of religious ulamas were among those standing against the Taliban in Takhar province, stressing that the uprising forces were operating closely with the country’s defense and security organs; therefore, there should be no concerns in this regard.
Responsibility of leading and mobilization of the uprising forces has been taken by most renowned figures and political leaders. In the country’s north, former vice president Marshal Abdul Rashid Dostum, former governor of Balkh Atta Mohammad Noor, leader of Hezb-e-Wahdat Islami and presidential advisor Mohammad Muhaqiq and representative of Balkh people in parliament Abas Ibrahimzada are holding responsibilities of some uprising forces.
Afghanistan Ministry of Defense (MoD) has declared that all necessary military equipment and arms will be provided to the increasing people’s uprising forces in the country.
Currently, there are concerns over increasing uprising forces and their future. Some uprising forces might create intrusion for ordinary people or probably turn to some illegal activities as there had been reports that local police forces had made serious problems to the people in the past.
Former Acting Minister of Defense Shah Mahmoud Miakhil says if some parallel forces are created beside ANDSF, the step won’t be good for the central government.
“Public urising forces should be brought to security forces framework although Taliban has not had any considerable gain in battlefields. Taliban does not have the ability to militarily win the war if they stop negotiations,” Miakhil said.
Meanwhile, acting minister of defense Gen. Bismiullah Mohammadi says the real and spiritual owner of Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) is the people of Afghanistan.
He asked all the people to strongly support the country’s defense and security forces as they were the pillar of Afghanistan’s sovereignty and integrity.
Currently, people’s uprising forces have taken arms almost in most provinces of the country particularly in Herat, Takhar, Sar-e-Pul, Balkh, Uruzgan, Baghlan, Faryab, Jawzjan, Khost and Paktia to support ANDSF and fight against Taliban fighters.
