KABUL: President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani met with General Kenneth F. McKenzie, the Commander of the United States Central Command on Saturday evening at the Presidential Palace, a statement said yesterday.
In the meeting that the first vice-president, Afghan NSA and acting minister of Defense were also present, both sides discussed start of peace negotiations between the delegation of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Taliban Group, supporting and strengthening Afghan Defense and Security forces, and the conditions in Afghanistan and the region, the presidential press office said.
General McKenzie said his goal of visiting Afghanistan on this important and historic day is to once again reiterate the United States’ support for the Afghan government, people and Defense and Security forces. He stressed all decisions will be made in consultation with the government of Afghanistan, according to the statement. The president while welcoming the commander of US Central Command, expressed gratitude to the United States for its principled stance that is supporting an independent, united and democratic Afghanistan, the statement added.
