President Ghani hails Uzbekistan, Iran’s support of Afghan peace process

KABUL: President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani had phone conversations with Presidents of Iran and Uzbekistan here yesterday, a statement said.

In conversation with Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan, the two sides exchanged Eid al-Adha greetings, sincerely wishing the fraternal peoples of the two countries peace, harmony and prosperity.

The Presidents noted with deep satisfaction the steadfast consolidation of late of the Afghan-Uzbek relations built on robust bonds of friendship and traditional good-neighborliness, common history, traditions and customs.

The telephone conversation has served to discuss pressing issues in the bilateral cooperation, primarily the enhancement of practical interaction in the economy, energy, transport and communications. President Ghani and President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and exchanged views also on critical aspects of the regional agenda.

The two leaders expressed full support for the decisive measures taken in both countries to counter the spread of coronavirus infection and control the epidemiological situation. The importance of minimizing the pandemic’s negative impact and maintaining the dynamics of trade and economic relations was emphasized.

The Presidents attached specific significance on intensifying the efforts designed to promote priority infrastructure and investment projects towards Afghanistan’s sustainable development and its active engagement in regional economic processes. In particular, it is the creation of a modern trade and logistics infrastructure in the border areas, implementation of major projects concerning the construction of power line Surkhan – Pul-e-Khumri and efficient transport corridors in Afghanistan, including with active involvement of international financial institutions and donor nations.

The heads of state considered issues of peaceful settlement of the Afghan crisis and expressed full support for the efforts undertaken on the soonest launch of inter-Afghan negotiations.

Meanwhile, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani highlighted the historic role of the March 2018 Tashkent International Conference on Afghanistan, which resulted in significant progress in the political resolution of the Afghan conflict.

Towards the end of the phone talk, the leaders of Uzbekistan and Afghanistan stressed their commitment to furthering the multilayered partnership in the interests of the two countries and the Central Asian region as a whole.

Meanwhile in another conversation with Iranian president, the two sides described peace in Afghanistan as peace and stability for the entire region, with Iranian leaders saying “The Islamic Republic of Iran has always stood by the people and government of Afghanistan for peace and stability, and the role of the Afghan government in international efforts with the aim of achieving peace is important for Iran”.

In this telephone conversation, the President of Afghanistan Mohammad Ashraf hani congratulated Eid al-Adha, and appreciated the goodwill, cooperation and support of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the people and government of Afghanistan, including medical and health services to Afghan refugees in Iran in fighting coronavirus, adding, “Some studies in Afghanistan show the process of controlling the outbreak of coronavirus in Afghanistan, which I hope will be the case”.

Stating that the private sectors of the two countries have well known the way of interaction with each other, the President of Afghanistan said, “Chabahar Port is developing at a good pace and I hope that the economic relations between Iran and Afghanistan will develop further by using this capacity”.

President Ghani appreciated the Islamic Republic of Iran’s position in supporting the system of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan on the topic of peace and the efforts and cooperation of the foreign ministers of the two countries in this regard and emphasized, “I hope Iran’s support for the peace process brings about more peace and security to the region and the world”.

Speaking in a telephone conversation with the President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani on Saturday evening, Dr. Hassan Rouhani felicitated Afghan president on Eid al-Adha, and said, “The Islamic Republic of Iran is determined to always deepen relations with the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan based on historical and cultural common grounds and strengthening these relations by taking advantage of economic, trade and transit capacity between the two countries”.

Rouhani expressed hope that the comprehensive document on Iran-Afghanistan cooperation would be completed soon, adding, “If the situation caused by the outbreak of coronavirus allows, we can hold an important meeting in the coming months”.

“In addition to signing a comprehensive document on cooperation between the two countries in Tehran, we can also record the operation of the Khaf-Herat railway as two historic events in the long list of friendly interactions between the two sides,” he continued.

Expressing satisfaction with the establishment of a temporary ceasefire in Afghanistan and expressing hope for the continuation and strengthening of the ceasefire and reduction of violence in the country, the President said, “The Islamic Republic of Iran has always supported the peace process led by the Afghan government and we hope that intra-Afghan talks pivoting around the legitimate government all political groups in Afghanistan and the Taliban will yield results according to the constitution”.

Rouhani expressed satisfaction with the Afghan President’s remarks on the results of studies that show the process of controlling the outbreak of coronavirus in the country, and said, “The Islamic Republic of Iran has been alongside the people and government of Afghanistan in fighting coronavirus, and will not spare any effort in this regard”.
