President Ghani, Dr. Abdullah reach deal to end political impasse

KABUL: President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and his political rival Dr. Abdullah Abdullah signed a deal after months of political discord here at the presidential palace yesterday.
Based on Deal, Dr. Abdullah will lead the High Council of National Reconciliation with executive authority and his team will have a share in the cabinet.
The document between President Ghani and Dr. Abdullah is called “political agreement.”
Meanwhile giving the marshal rank to former vice president Abdul Rashid Dostum is another component of the agreement.
 
The Reconciliation Council has been given the authority to handle all affairs related to the Afghan peace process.
 
Addressing the ceremony, president Ghani thanked Dr. Abdullah for leading the reconciliation council as well as praised the roles played by former president Hamid Karzai and Jihadi leader Ustad Sayaaf.
 
The president hoped the move lead to lasting peace and ceasefire in the country.
 
Dr. Abdullah also said that people were waiting for such day and at the time that both insecurity and COVID-19 threatening the country.
 
Afghanistan has been in political disarray since the election commission in December announced President Ghani had won the September 28 election with more than 50 percent of the vote. Dr. Abdullah had about 39 percent votes.
