KABUL: President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Mohammad Ashraf Ghani met with a number of political and influential figures here at the presidential palace.
The president met with jihadi leader Abdul Rab Rasul Sayyaf, former vice president Karim Khalili, political figures, Mohammad Amin Karim and Sayed Mahmoud Hasamuddin Gilani, a presidential palace statement said yesterday.
The president and the country’s political and influential figures discussed the general situation of the country, while emphasizing the strengthening of political consensus. The politicians expressed their support for the system, the security and defense forces, and the preservation of the values of the last two decades.
This comes as heavy fighting is underway between Afghan security forces and the Taliban in central parts of three northern provinces of Kunduz, Sar-e-Pul and Jawzjan with reports of civilian casualties in the clashes.
US President Joe Biden has ordered B-52 bombers and Specter gunships to target Taliban positions in Afghanistan who are advancing towards key cities, Mail Online reported on Saturday as embattled Afghan security forces are fighting the resurgent group in various parts of the country.
