KABUL: President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani in a phone conversation with President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan extended congratulations to him on securing another tenure in office, a presidential press office statement said yesterday. President Ghani wished success for President Rahmon and prosperity and well-being for the brotherly people of Tajikistan and hoped that his re-election would result in further bolstering bilateral ties between Afghanistan and Tajikistan, according to the statement. Rahmon has been re-elected for a fifth term with 90.92 percent of the vote, preliminary data on Monday revealed. He is 68 and has run the Persian-speaking nation of 9.5 million people since 1992 and was widely expected to secure a seven-year term in office in the absence of strong domestic opposition.
