KABUL: President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani awarded state medal of Ghazi Mir Masjidi Khan to David Metcalfe, the outgoing ambassador of Canada to Afghanistan here yesterday morning at the Presidential Palace in recognition of his efforts and services during his tenure in Kabul, a statement from the presidential press office said.
President Ghani commended Ambassador David Metcalfe for his endeavors in further consolidation of ties and enhancing mutual trust and cooperation between Afghanistan and Canada and wished him success in his future missions, according to the statement.
“Canada’s cooperation and bilateral ties on shared values; women empowerment, peace, support to education and health are remarkable essence of our relations,” said the president, as quoted in the statement.
Ambassador Metcalfe extended gratitude to President Ghani for awarding him with the state medal and termed his mission in Afghanistan historic. He also thanked Afghans for their hospitality and expressed happiness on working with them. He hoped that peace and stability prevail in Afghanistan so that he can visit the country with his family as tourists.
David Metcalfe stressed that Canada remains committed to the Afghan government and people and would participate at the upcoming Geneva Conference to renew its commitments to Afghanistan particularly in the areas of peace and development, the statement added.
