The issue of US troop withdrawal has been repeatedly raised by the country President Donald Trump, but it is believed that hasty US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan will put negative impacts on the situation in the ground.
A number of Afghan military experts and government officials say conditions for the US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan have not been provided as war on terror is still ongoing in the country; therefore, Afghanistan needs military presence of the US in the country.
Meanwhile, representatives of the people in Afghanistan parliament by expressing concern over possible US troop withdrawal from the country have stressed on further concentration to peace efforts in the country besides supporting and equipping the ANDSF.
They also stressed that further equipping the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces would change the angle of war in the country, saying that any decisions if made for supporting the ANDSF should be implemented as implementation of any supporting program would help ANDSF stand on their feet, which could pave the way for US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.
“NATO member countries in particular the US is big powerful country that can help and support Afghanistan in the long-term to continue counter terrorism effort as there are still increasing threats posed by terrorist groups in the country,” said Mirdad Nijrabi, an Afghan lawmaker.
He added that one of the most serious need for maintaining security and peace in Afghanistan was to equip and fund the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) as they needed long-term support from NATO member countries in particular the US to fight terrorist groups and receive further military trainings.
According to Afghan military experts, undoubtedly presence of the international community in particular the US is very significant for Afghanistan as the country and its people have suffered a lot from continued war. “Hasty US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan will further deteriorate security situation as well as economic ones,” said Hadi Khalid, former deputy minister of interior. He added that there would be no pretext for the Taliban group to continue violence and the ongoing war if plan for the US troop withdrawal was implemented. “If US pull out its military forces from Afghanistan without any peace agreement with the Taliban group, we will witness negative consequences and increasing violence and war in the country as US air strike to target Taliban fighters and terrorists will be stopped and their bases will shut one by one in the country,” Khalid stressed. Amir Mohammad, another Afghan political expert, believes if plan for US troop withdrawal is implemented, NATO member countries in particular the US will reduce the level of fund to the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) and will give further chance to Taliban to take control of many key provinces. It is worth mentioning that currently a number of US forces are engaged in training and advising the ANDSF in the country as Afghan security forces need close support and cooperation of the international forces in battlefields.
