Online shopping market increasing in Kabul


Online shopping market is a new phenomenon in Afghanistan. Online business has improved unprecedentedly in recent years in the country.
Online business and shopping as well as selling and purchasing goods through internet are growing in Afghanistan amid bombings, suicide attacks and explosions that have killed and wounded a large number of Afghan civilians in recent years in the country in particular Kabul, the capital.
Kabul residents have welcomed online shopping stores and are happy when they do shopping through web pages and social media.
“Online shopping is a good experience for Afghan youths and a good option for those who are afraid of walking on Kabul streets because of possible explosions and suicide attacks,” said Suhaila, a school student in Kabul.
Based on UN statistics, more than 60% of Afghanistan population is youths who are mostly under 25 years of age and most of them are equipped with smart phones and can do shopping through internet.
Despite that online shopping is something new in Kabul, it seems that the step is winning the heart of Kabul residents who say they have found it an easy way to purchase their favorite goods.
Tamim Rasa, founder of an online shopping store, started his business in Kabul by investing nearly $30,000 eight months ago. He has signed MoUs with more than 60 shops in the city. He added that 89% of his customers were women mostly ordering cosmetics.
“We’re working as bridge between the people and big shopping centers. At the beginning, it was difficult to get something and we were in the loss, but now we get $20 – 50 incomes daily, showing that our business is improving,” Rasa said.
After improving the online shopping market in Kabul, Rasa is planning to widen the business in Herat, Kandahar, Balkh and Nangarhar.
Maryam, who has purchased some goods and dresses through online shopping services, says unfortunately our people are not interested in purchasing goods and dresses through online shopping as most of stuffs and goods are low-quality, asking online shopping markets and shops for attention to provide high-quality products to customers.
It is worth mentioning that Global online retail sales are growing and is estimated to reach 8.8% of total retail spending in 2018 as compared to 7.4% in 2016.  In terms of country, UK has the highest retail E-commerce sales as %age of total retail sales (15.6%).
