KABUL: The National Unity Government Leaders met with the visiting US Foreign Secretary’s special representative for Afghanistan reconciliation, Zalmay Khalilzad, here yesterday.
During a meeting at the presidential palace, US envoy briefed the president on his negotiations in Doha and recent trip to Pakistan, the presidential press office told The Kabul Times daily.
Both sides also discussed ceasefire and Taliban’s safe havens beyond Afghan borders. The president also expressed concern over Taliban’s continued violence, the statement added. The president said Afghan people and government wanted lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan. Meanwhile in a separate meeting, Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah Abdullah hoped the peace agreement lead to ending of violence and bloodshed in the country. Dr. Abdullah also said peace was the main demand and priority of the Afghan people.
The NUG leaders and the US envoy hoped to reach ceasefire before any peace deal in Afghanistan.
