‘No durable peace without ensuring justice’

Peace, stability, human rights and effective governance based on the rule of law are important conduits for sustainable development that cannot be achieved without justice. We are living in a world that is increasingly divided. Some regions enjoy sustained levels of peace, security and prosperity while others fall into seemingly endless cycles of conflict and violence. This is by no means inevitable and must be addressed.
High levels of armed violence and insecurity have a destructive impact on a country’s development, affecting economic growth and often resulting in long standing grievances among communities that can last for generations.
Commemorating the Milad al-Nabi or Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) birthday in Kabul, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Saturday said that Afghanistan is edging towards peace and it was the time to think about ending the war, however, he stated that creating a durable peace will not be possible without justice.
“In order to restore a durable peace in the society—not a temporary peace—there is a need for justice to prevail so that no one feels oppressed,” said the president.
The Sustainable Development Goal 16, calls for promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, providing access to justice for all and building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels
Indeed, we can only look forward to a more equal and sustainable world if we have more peaceful and inclusive societies. That would be possible if all join hands in reducing crime, violence, and exploitation. The illegal arms and drug trade will have to stop. Public institutions that we all rely on will have to be effective, transparent and accountable.
The government of Afghansitan has taken bold steps towards fighting corruption, opium production, drug and human trafficking, strengthening of public institutions to provide better services to the people across the country and even has approved many laws to facilitate people with access to information and guarantee their rights.
The abovementioned developments mean that all necessary steps have been taken for a durable peace in the country, but what is really important to have neighbor countries’ true and honest cooperation in the process. They are required to give up support of the militants and close their safe havens in their major cities.
Transborder crimes, terrorism and extremism bring violence and instability, can limit freedom of movement and access to employment and educational opportunities, degrades the quality of life and threatens the basic rights of people, including the right to life and security.
Some of the greatest challenges to peace and security in Afghanistan are crimes which, while committed on national territory, permeate national borders and affect entire regions and ultimately the international community as a whole. This is an evolving challenge for the rule of law and the protection of human rights and illustrates well the strong linkages with peace and security. Terrorism represents a threat to security and stability and can undermine economic and social development. To counter such threats, the regional countries and the world should join hands to promote justice and equality for a durable peace in Afghansitan, the region and the whole world.
