‘Municipality elections key priority for IDLG’

Matin Big

KABUL: Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) head Abdul Matin Bek addressing an event “Accountability of the Government before the Nation” here at the Government Media and Information Center on Thursday said the IDLG played a key role in terms of facilitating urban services and legislation last year.
He went on saying that conducting municipal elections was their priority and they were trying to appoint one or two mayors through a ballot this year.
He said last year President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani devoted 25 percent of his time visiting provincial administrations.
Matin Bek, while addressing media said the adoption of a roadmap for good governance, approval of the law on local councils and the law of municipalities were among IDLG achievements.
He said the municipal law paved the ground for election of mayors and the ballot was their priority for this ongoing year. He said last year mayors were appointed through a competition process in which two women also got the slot.
He said district chiefs were also appointed through a competition process to stable areas but in insecure places such competition was not necessary and only those having tribal support were welcomed.
The IDLG head claimed currently 20 districts were out of the government’s control nationwide.
