KABUL: A meeting chaired by First Vice President Amrullah Saleh to discuss ways to regulate the presence of Afghan refugees in the Islamic Republic of Iran, was held yesterday at the presidential palace, a statement said.
The meeting was also attended by acting Foreign Minister Mohammad Hanif Atmar, Minister of Refugees and Repatriation Seyed Hossein Alemi Balkhi, Jawid Rasouli, Director General of the NationalStatistics and Information Authority, and the head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Afghanistan, the presidential press office said.
The meeting discussed, Afghan migrants’ live in Iran, their legal status and ways to legalize their presence in that country, the statement added.
During the meeting, it was decided that during his forthcoming visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran, the acting Foreign Minister meet with Iranian officials and discuss the Afghan government’s preparations for the process of establishing identity, distributing electronic ID cards and issuing passports for Afghan refugees as well as legalizing their presence in that country.
The meeting followed a meeting of the National Security Council and another meeting, chaired by the President Ghani to discuss and resolve the problems of Afghan refugees living in Iran.
