KABUL: US Special Representative for Afghanistan reconciliation, Zalmay Khalilzad held separate meetings with High Peace Council Chairman Karim Khalili, UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative Tadamichi Yamamoto and ambassadors of some countries in Kabul.
Khalilzad briefed the officials on the latest round of peace negotiations with Taliban representatives in Doha, the capital of Qatar.
On Monday, during a roundtable discussion with Afghan media professionals here, Khalilzad said ‘significant progress’ had been made at the meetings with the Taliban delegation in Doha.
”I just arrived from Doha. I spent several days there meeting the Taliban delegation.
The latest meetings were much better than the previous ones.
“We made progress on vital issues in our discussions and agreed in principle on a couple of very important issues,” he claimed.
The US envoy said: “There is a lot more work to be done before we can say we have succeeded in our efforts, but I believe for the first time I can say that we have made significant progress.”
