The Ariana volleyball club from Afghan refugees in Iran won the title for the 15th Women’s Volleyball Championship in a thrilling match against Herat’s team in Kabul on Friday.
The match ended 3-2 in Ariana’s favor.
The two teams demonstrated a tough and interesting match in the final match. Ten teams competed in the championship, which took place over the past week. Both teams played their semi-final matches in Kabul on Thursday. Herat on Thursday faced the Red Crescent team and won 0-3. The Iran-based Afghan women’s team beat the Kabul municipality team. “The level of the matches was quite different. There was good media coverage, and this further adds to the inspiration of the girls,” said Zahra Fayazi, head of the Women’s Volleyball Federation.
“Alongside our motivation for a victory, we also came to see our country, because we are migrants there and we are enthusiastic to come and demonstrate our ability,” said Fatima, member of Ariana team.
“The matches were quite professional compared to previous years. Teams that came from provinces had good capacity,” said Mursal, a member of the Kabul Municipality team.
With today’s match, the Herat team stood second and Kabul Municipality and Afghan Red Crescent teams got third and fourth positions respectively.
