As peace talks are going on between US delegates led by Zalmay Khalilzad and Taliban negotiators in Qatar, military operations of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) have increased in recent weeks.
Officials for the ministry of defense say ground and air operations have been started to hit positions and strongholds of Taliban fighters posing threats to people in various parts of the country.
According to the ministry of defense, Taliban fighters have suffered heavy casualties as a result of military operations launched recently by Afghan National Defense and Security Forces in a number of insecure provinces in particular Balkh.
“Dozens of Taliban fighters have been killed and their strongholds and weapon caches have been destroyed in a series of ground and air operations led by ANDSF forces,” said Fawad Aman, deputy spokesperson to the ministry of defense.
He added that 51 terrorists have been killed and a number of others wounded and arrested during the operations in various parts of the country.
“The operations have been launched recently in Badghis, Balkh, Helmand, Kandahar, Farah and Ghazni provinces,” Aman said, adding that special operations have been also launched in Balkh, Jawzjan and Faryab provinces to maintain security and clear areas from presence of Taliban fighters.
According to officials for the ministry of defense, the country’s defense and security forces will continue their military operations against armed Taliban fighters until they stop violence and join peace process. The military operations have been launched amid of continued efforts towards maintaining peace and stability in the country.
Meanwhile, a number of Afghan military and political experts believe that increasing military operations will continue as Taliban have not accepted ceasefire in the country, but stressing that ANDSF should launch their operations with full precision to avoid civilian casualties.
“The most important issue is that Taliban have not said yes to ceasefire so far; therefore, when peace talks between US sides and Taliban negotiators continue, war continues as well and whenever war continues in the country, ADNSF should intensify their military operations against Taliban fighters,” said Atiqullah Amarkhil, an Afghan military expert.
He added that enhancement of capabilities of ANDSF in aggressive attacks was another reason for intensification of the ANDSF operations against terrorists in the country; therefore, the winter season was a good opportunity for execution and launching successfully military operations against Taliban fighters in various parts of the country.
Meanwhile, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani in his recent remarks made for the support of ANDSF has said anybody using arms against the government was considered as enemy of this land and should be suppressed.
It is worth mentioning that increasing military operations by ANDSF in winter season can be considered as helpful and effective for maintaining security in areas facing with increasing threats posed by Taliban. Amid of increasing military operations against Taliban fighters in the country’s north, National Security Advisor in a visit to Mazar-e-Sharif assured the people that their ANDSF would continue military operations to clear all areas in the province from presence of Taliban.
