Officials for Afghanistan Independent Election Commission (IEC) have informed of full preparation for timely holding the upcoming presidential elections in the country. According to the IEC officials, all required election materials, including ballot papers, result sheets, and ink, have arrived from abroad and the transfer of the materials to provinces has been also kicked off.
Despite of doubts on capabilities of IEC for holding the elections, the commission is assuring of timely holding the presidential elections in the country.
Head of the Independent Election Commission, Hawa Alam Nuristani, in a news the other day assured that her team was fully ready to hold the presidential election on its scheduled time.
She said that all required election materials, including ballot papers, result sheets, and ink, have arrived from abroad and the transfer of the materials to provinces has also started.
Nuristani said that holding a national identity card and fingerprint would be a must on the election day.
“We want to assure the great Afghan people that the election commission is fully prepared to hold the election on the sixth of Meezan coinciding with 28th of September,” she said.
According the to officials of the Independent Election Commission, a new mechanism is considered to be followed for use of the biometric system on election day.
Based on the new mechanism, 400 voters will be registered in each biometric device.
It is worth mentioning that 9.6 million people have registered to vote in the presidential election scheduled for September 28.
Afghan experts believe that transparency in elections is one of the key principle that should be maintained during the election process as it is considered as rights of the people, meaning it is the right of the people to take part in election and be informed of the process’s transparency and its results.
Fraud and violation in elections might be one of the challenges in holding the elections, but where there is serious determination and continued watch on all processes of the elections, pavements for possible fraud and violation become limited.
Holding timely presidential elections is something must as President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has said the government was obliged to provide all necessary resources for holding the elections, maintain security and prevent from any interferences in the elections.
Meanwhile, all preparations are underway for timely holding the coming presidential elections despite of increasing security challenges in many parts of the country as well as the ongoing peace talks between US delegates and representatives of the Taliban group.
It is worth mentioning that the number of voters who can cast their votes during the upcoming presidential election has reached to 9.6 million. According to IEC officials, a considerable number of people have registered to participate in upcoming presidential elections.
