KABUL: Pen, considered as a symbol of thought and awareness to the society, has vital role in development of communities. 16 Sour (5 May) coincides with Pen Day in Afghanistan. Naming a day as Pen Day in Afghanistan National Calendar is to honor knowledge, learning and teaching.

For the people of Afghanistan with historic civilization and culture, pen has particular and significant position as they consider pen as compiler and introducer of their national and Islamic identification.

As a symbol of thought and awareness to the people, pen has special position in the religion of Islam as the first verse of the Holy Quran and the start of prophet-hood of Hazrat Mohammad (PBUH) has begun with the order to read and write, showing that pen is the only tool for learning and receiving knowledge.

Observing chastity, honesty, awareness, enlightenment and instruction of audience towards light are considered as responsibilities of pen and pen-owners. The influence and impact of pen which is the first source of knowledge is superior to sword. Anything we know today, anything we say today and any development we see around the world are all by the blessing of pen as it has worked as the only source for introduction of our identification, history and past.

Pen is the protector of thoughts of knowledgeable figures, connecting ring of past and connecting bridge between past and future. On this day, we honor pen-owners, poets, writers, researchers and knowledgeable figures helping in receiving knowledge and trainings.

One of the most significant and valuable issues of a nation interested in their life, survival and evolution cannot neglect of it as it is the issue of writing. Pen is a tool that connects human beings around the world.

According to 19th article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

The respective article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights has been recognized as one of the most principal human rights. Thus, after passing several years from the declaration, individuals are still investigated due to their thoughts in a number of countries in the world and from among these individuals, pen owners are mostly threatened in the world.

This day should not be kept only as an occasion in calendars but on this day writers and pen owners should get united and raise a single voice for their principal rights meaning freedom of expression. If the Pen Day is considered as a day, it mostly requires the support of people to encourage fans of pen owners to honor the day as a special day each year.
