Following concern over security of Hamid Karzai International Airport after the US and NATO troops withdrawal from Afghanistan, National Security Council says the airport will remain operated with world standards.
Afghanistan National Security Advisor Dr. Hamdullah Mohib in a visit to Hamid Karzai International Airport and NATO Resolute Mission Command based in the airport said the airport would remain operated with world standards.
Mohib paid visit to various locations as air traffic control area, fire- fighting services, metrology complex unit, airport safety management, radar system, telecommunication and monitoring unit, planning and maintenance and protection part of Hamid Karzai International Airport.
This comes amid of concerns over security of Hamid Karzai International Airport following the US and NATO troops withdrawal process from Afghanistan.
Recently, foreign and international media have reported that it is determined that a Turkish military unit will soon take responsibility for the security of Hamid Karzai International Airport. One of the main concerns of NATO member countries is the security of their nationals and diplomats while in mission to Afghanistan. NATO says it will work on options for maintaining security of Hamid Karzai International Airport. The most significant challenge facing western officials is the security issue of Hamid Karzai International Airport, where it plays key role between foreign embassies located in green-zone of Kabul and foreign world.
Meanwhile, Afghan security organs have assured of maintaining security of the airport, saying that all necessary measures have been taken for maintaining security and safety of flights conducted through the airport.
Officials for the ministry of interior say particular measures are underway as all necessary means will be used for the security and safety of flights at Hamid Karzai International Airport.
Afghanistan Civil Aviation Authority has declared that it is ready to take all responsibilities for the air control particularly air traffic and control of Hamid Karzai International Airport.
US army says work is underway how to maintain security for Hamid Karzai International Airport, how to provide support to forces based in the airport and which countries want to partner to do so.
entagon has estimated that nearly 1,000 – 15,000 forces are needed for the security of the airport. Currently, Turkish forces are maintaining security for Hamid Karzai International Airport.
As US and NATO troops withdrawal process from Afghanistan is underway, Afghan special forces are considered as the only force for possibly maintaining security for the respective airport. If Taliban intensifies their attacks on various parts of the country, the Afghan special forces will be deployed to prevent from falling to the hands of Taliban.
US delegation has said that several NATO member countries have shown tendency to take responsibility for the security of Hamid Karzai International Airport and continued presence in Kabul. It is worth mentioning that responsibility for the security of Hamid Karzai International Airport has been on foreign forces for the past 20 years, but the forces are now withdrawing from Afghanistan as six big bases have been handed over to Afghan defense and security organs.
