German defense minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer in her visit to Afghanistan has assured of her country’s continued cooperation with Afghanistan in various fields. The German defense minister has also hoped results of the Sep 28 Presidential election would be soon announced by Independent Election Commission.
After informing of extension of her country’s military mission in framework of NATO RS mission in Mazar-e-Sharif, the German defense minister called on President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani at Presidential Palace the other day.
In a joint news conference with President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, the German defense minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer said: “We hope that the results of the free elections which have been held, are announced soon and all stakeholders accept the results so that a strong government is formed which could strengthen peace negotiations”.
She also talked about Germany’s readiness to extend the mission of almost 1,000 German troops in Afghanistan.
“We have a shared goal and it is that the people of Afghanistan should live in a secure environment and join hands and cooperate,” she said.
In the news conference, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani meanwhile welcomed Germany’s assistance to Afghanistan and said it has had a constructive role in the Afghan peace process.
“We discussed Afghanistan’s future from different perspectives,” President Ghani said. “Germany has hosted three big conferences on Afghanistan at a higher level and in all of them it has insisted on a stable, democratic and dignified Afghanistan.”
During the past 18 years, Afghanistan has witnessed unprecedented support of the international community in particular Germany, a country which has extended its military mission in Afghanistan for another year.
Besides supporting Afghanistan in training and mentoring Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF), Germany is still providing humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan and helping the country in strengthening democracy and peace.
The main goal of the German government is to help Afghanistan in peace, creating a peaceful environment, improving the living condition of the people and strengthening the government capacities and civil society organization.
Moreover, the German government is working closely with Afghanistan government to expand and support ANP force so that they can implement the rule of law and maintain security in the country as security in Afghanistan in the long-term can be guaranteed at a situation in which Afghan security force have the ability to do and accept all their responsibilities in accordance to the law.
Germany is also funding literacy programs for ANP male and female officers as well as other programs for building confidence between ANP and the people. It is worth mentioning that Germany has provided assistance worth nearly 7 billion USD to Afghanistan in the past 18 years.
