KABUL: Charles Michel, President of the European Council and Ursula von der Leyen, President of European Commission sent a letter to President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and extended congratulations to him on securing a second term in office, a statement from the presidential press office said yesterday.
“In a spirit of partnership, we look forward to working with you and your government to continue deepening and strengthening the European Union’s engagement with Afghanistan,” the letter reads, as quoted in the statement.
They have expressed the European Union’s continuous support for the constitutional and institutional framework of Afghanistan and stressed the importance of a fair, credible and transparent election process, adding that the commitment was owed to all Afghan citizens, who have shown bravery and used their right to vote to express their belief in democracy, despite the difficult security situation, the statement added.
They have underscored the importance that all Afghan citizens feel represented in the new government and in the peace negotiations with the Taliban as the country enters a crucial phase in its efforts towards peace.
“Unity is essential to master the challenging tasks ahead and to secure a stable long-term future of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan,” adds the letter, according to the statement.
The European council and commission presidents have highlighted they expect the new government to ensure inclusion of all political factions including oppositions as well as a meaningful representation of Afghan women, minorities and civil society representatives in the upcoming peace process, the statement added.
They termed respect for the constitutional order and principles of rule of law paramount during the peace process.
They have expressed the European Union’s readiness to facilitate and support peace process with the aim of preserving and building upon the political, economic and social achievements of the people of Afghanistan since 2001, which should be irreversible, the statement went on to say.
They have also assured the Afghan government of the union’s relentless support to overcome the negative impacts of the coronavirus spread on those achievements and to exchange their experiences for handling this global challenge with the government.
At the end of the letter, they have reaffirmed commitment to continue their cooperation for the sake of the Afghan citizen’s legitimate quest for peace, stability and prosperity.
