KAUL: India and the European Union (EU) have welcomed the announcement of the preliminary results of the presidential election in Afghanistan yesterday.
“We note the conclusion of the first phase of the Independent Election Commission’s (IEC) work and welcome moving to the next step of the process with the Independent Electoral Complains Commission (IECC) with a view to announcing a formal outcome,” the EU said in a statement.
Any complaints should be addressed only through the established procedures as specified in the electoral law. “We support the work of the lECC to conduct the crucial task of adjudicating the complaints in a professional, independent and timely manner. We reaffirm the pivotal importance of this election in entrenching democracy in Afghanistan.”
The Indian government also welcomed the announcement of presidential election.
India External Ministry’s Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said: “We welcome the announcement of the preliminary results of the Presidential election of Afghanistan held on 28 September and commend all the leaders and institutions for their hard work to preserve and strengthen democracy in the country. “We expect that the complaints would be addressed through the prescribed legal processes so that the final results are declared in a timely manner,” he added Raveesh hoped that the Afghan leaders and other stakeholders will work together to further strengthen the democratic polity and to fight the serious challenges of terrorism facing the country. “India remains committed to work with the people and Government of Afghanistan in its fight against terrorism and in its pursuit of socio-economic development,” he said.
