EU, India, Kuwait congratulate President Ghani on his re-election

KABUL: The European Union (EU) Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Vice-President Josep Borrell has congratulated President Ghani on his reelection and hailed the poll panels for dealing with challenges in the electoral process, the statement from presidential press office said on Thursday.
The EU looked forward to continuing working with the new administration, Borrell said, welcoming President Ghani’s commitment to forming an inclusive government that represented all Afghans, according to the statement.
He called for unity in support of an inclusive peace process. The EU stood ready to support the peace drive an opportunity that must not be wasted, the statement from the presidential palace concluded.
Meanwhile, India also congratulated Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Thursday on his re-election as the president of Afghanistan and asserted that it remained committed to working with the new government in fighting the scourge of “externally-sponsored terrorism”.
India also reaffirmed its support for an enduring and inclusive national peace and reconciliation that is Afghan-led, Afghan-owned and Afghan-controlled.
“We congratulate President Dr. Ashraf Ghani on his re-election following the announcement of final results of the Presidential elections by the Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India said in a statement.
“India supports the democratic aspirations of the people of Afghanistan and remains committed to continue to work with the new government and the democratic polity in strengthening our bilateral strategic partnership in fighting the scourge of externally sponsored terrorism,” it added.
India also expressed support for an enduring and inclusive national peace and reconciliation that is Afghan-led, Afghan-owned and Afghan-controlled. “We hope that the new government and all political leaders in Afghanistan would work to strengthen national unity, promote inclusivity and protect the rights and interests of all segments of society,” the MEA said. The Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah of Kuwait also sent on Thursday a cable to President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, congratulating him on his re-election to serve a new term in office.
“His Highness the Amir in the cable wished the president wellbeing and his country prosperity and promotion. His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah addressed cables of identical content to the re-elected president,” the Kuwait Times quoted as saying.
