KABUL: President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani in a phone conversation with Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy yesterday morning lauded EU’s principled stance on supporting the peace process, values of the republic and a nationwide cease-fire in Afghanistan, a presidential press office statement said.
Josep Borrell conveyed his sympathies to the victim families affected by the terrorist attack that targeted the convoy of First Vice-President Amrullah Saleh, the statement added.
The EU High Representative expressed EU’s enduring support for strengthening and protecting the values of republic and declaring support for an independent, united and democratic Afghanistan, which is the end state pursued by the Afghan government, according to the statement.
Borrell said the EU will deliver the message to the Taliban that the union’s future support for Afghanistan will depend upon preservation of the values of republic in the country. He added that he intends to pay a visit to Afghanistan at a suitable opportunity to announce support for republic and Afghanistan’s end state.
