Concerns over security along highways increasing

Besides continued war and increasing attacks of Taliban in various parts of the country, increasing insecurities along highways of the country has raised serious concern of people who are asking the government to take necessary steps towards maintaining securities along roads and highways.
Presence of armed robbers along highways has created lots of problems for drivers and passengers. According to drivers and passengers, security check posts that have been installed along highways are not sufficient.
Afghanistan ministry of interior considers maintaining security of highways as its top working priorities, saying that the country’s defense and security organs have various security programs to improve security of roads and highways.
“The ministry of interior is working to implement various programs for maintaining security of highways,” said Tariq Arian, a spokesperson to the ministry of interior. He said that considerable changes would occur once the programs were implemented.
Based on reports, armed irresponsible individuals conduct searching operations along highways in various parts of the country on daily basis. Passengers and drivers commuting to Kabul – Logar say Taliban usually install check posts along Kabul – Logar highway and search passengers and sometime they clash with ANDSF.
“Kabul – Logar highway is insecure and people cannot commute easily as Taliban do searching along the highway as the road is now known as death highway,” said Samiullah, a resident of Logar but living now in Kabul due to increasing insecurities in Logar.
Abdul Hadi, a driver commuting from Logar to Kabul on daily basis, says sometimes passengers wait hours due to clashes between Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) and Taliban fighters along the highway.
Samiullah, another driver driving his car along Kandahar – Herat highway for the past four years, says armed robbers conducting searching posts along Kandahar – Herat highway rob properties of passengers on daily basis.
“Armed robbers and irresponsible individuals usually stop cars and rob passengers’ properties on daily basis,” Samiullah added.
A number of lawmakers and residents of various provinces by complaining of increasing armed robberies along highways in the country asked the government to pay serious attention to improvement of security along all highways in the country so that the people can travel in a secure environment.
Nevertheless, officials for the ministry of defense say the country’s defense and security organs particularly Afghan National Army have put maintaining security of highways and roads in top working priorities.
This comes amid of increasing insecurities and attacks of Taliban on highways roads in various parts of the country.
