KABUL: A heavy blast confirmed by police, blew up a mosque in police district 9, has killed the imam—the prayer leader and injured at least 16 others, in the capital Kabul on Friday.
The incident happened at around 1 p.m. local time, when explosive devices placed under the mosque platform from where the imam was delivering speech detonated martyred Mawlavi Samiullah Raihan, the Imam of the mosque at the spot and injuring 16 other worshipers, media quoting the ministry of interior said.
The country’s president Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, strongly condemned the incident and called it a terrorist act that resulted in martyredom of the religious scholar, a statement from the Presidential Palace received by The Kabul Times said.
“Terrorists are targeting religious scholars by their own false interpretation of the holy Islamic teachings,” said the president.
He said terrorists could never weaken the strong voice of the religious scholars to express the truth, the statement said.
The President instructed the related organs for full investigation into the case and bringing those involved to justice.
The president prayed for the soul of the martyred Mawlavi Raihan and asked great patient for his bereaved family.
