KABUL: The cabinet meeting with President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on the chair has discussed the government’s preparations for the withdrawal of all international troops from the country and called for convening a Loya Jirga to declare Afghanistan’s permanent impartiality, according to a presidential palace statement.
President Ghani, as quoted in the statement, explained the exit of foreign forces in no way meant the weakening of Kabul-Washington ties. He also said that the US withdrawal opened a new chapter in bilateral relations.
The statement added the cabinet also conferred on the enforcement of bilateral and multilateral agreements following the departure of the American forces. The meeting also discussed empowering security and defense forces, recent remarks by Muslim countries’ scholars calling the Afghanistan war illegitimate.
The participants proposed convening a Loya Jirga on Afghanistan’s impartiality in the wake of the foreign troop withdrawal, a process which will be completed by September 11.
This comes as President Ghani at an online event last week said the Afghan government “is not at risk of collapse” as feared because Afghanistan’s allies, mainly the United States, have announced the withdrawal of foreign forces from the country in the upcoming few months.
He said that all these forces have been brought into one command of the Afghanistan National Authority for Special Operations and that they carry out 30 to 40 operations every day.
