Afghans begin landmark presidential election

KABUL: Voting officially began for Afghanistan presidential election at 7:00a.m. on Saturday. This is fourth poll since the end of Taliban rule in 2001.

Seventeen people, including incumbent President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah registered themselves as candidates, five of whom left the competition.

People across Afghanistan have been waiting in long queues to vote for their desired candidates. More than nine million people have been registered as voters.

Meanwhile the insurgent threatened to disrupt the process, however Afghan forces assured full security of the polls.
