Afghanistan sees surge in new COVID-19 cases

KABUL: The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) on Sunday reported that 94 individuals had tested positive for COID-19 in Afghanistan in the past 24 hours, taking the total cases to 39,799.
In a statement, the ministry said 475 individuals underwent tests and 94 of them were diagnosed with the virus during the period.
Sixty-one new cases were recorded in Herat, 11 each in Daikundi and Parwan, three each in Baghlan and Badghis and one each in Kabul, Paktia and Zabul provinces.
Around 50 people recovered from the pandemic during the period, pushing up the number of recoveries to 33,114.

Four people died in the last 24 hours from the virus that has so far killed 1,477 individuals in Afghanistan.
Acting Minister of Public Health Jawad Ahmad Usmani said last week the pandemic was under control in the country. He told a news conference here they were fully prepared to fight a possible second wave of the coronavirus in the country.
