Afghanistan asks international community for monitoring election process

President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on his recent visit to United Kingdom (UK) has asked the UK government to play a role in monitoring the upcoming elections for ensuring transparency of the process. The UK government assured of continued work with Afghanistan for fostering and strengthening democracy in the country.
A number of Afghan experts and citizens by welcoming the Afghan government’s request say one of causes of irregularities and problems in the previous parliamentary elections was lack of world monitoring team.
They stressed that international observers were not able to monitor Afghanistan parliamentary elections due to various reasons that have resulted in widespread violations and frauds.
“Although the people of Afghanistan have experienced elections several times, it is necessary that international observers should be present in the country to monitor the elections process,” said Aminzoy, an Afghan political expert and university lecturer.
He added that those governments providing financial support to Afghanistan elections process should also provide facilities to international observers to monitor Afghanistan presidential elections process, or the process would face with challenges as previous elections.
Jamal Farahmand, another Afghan political expert believes that the upcoming presidential elections should be held on its exact time as holding timely and transparently presidential elections are one of principle demands of the people and international community.
“International observers from the point of the people and presidential candidates are impartial elements who can monitor the elections process in a better way. On the other hand, international observers can improve the face of Afghanistan in the world level, which can guarantee the world’s continued assistance to Afghanistan,” Farahmand said. He added ground should be provided to international observers, or the presidential elections would face with further challenges. Presence of international observers during the upcoming presidential elections process will somehow make Afghan presidential candidates and ordinary people assure more on the elections process. According to Afghan political experts and the people, electoral commissions have not the ability to hold timely and transparently presidential elections without the technical assistance of the international community; therefore, presence of international observers and their technical help is key during the upcoming presidential elections. They believe that monitoring the upcoming presidential elections and making correctly use of biometric in the elections are key for soundness of the coming presidential elections. They are also stressing on acceleration of issuing electronic tazkiras countrywide.
As the country’s electoral commissions have declared that all preparations are underway for timely presidential elections set to be held in September, defense and security organs have assured of maintaining security for the elections. Officials for ministries of defense and interior say maintaining of security during the upcoming presidential elections are one the most significant priorities of the country’s defense and security organs. They assured that further efforts would be made for maintaining security of the elections process, asking the people to widely participate in the elections.
