KABUL: Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has called for an urgent Loya Jirga to determine the fate of the remaining Taliban prisoners, according to government sources.
The sources have confirmed to state-run RTA (Afghanistan Radio and Television) that the Loya Jirga (Grand Assembly) will be held on August 7th to determine the fate of dangerous Taliban prisoners held by the Afghan government.
“The president to consult with people’s representatives on releasing of the 400 Taliban prisoners,” RTA quoted government sources.
Releasing of the 400 Taliban prisoners were earlier rejected by the Afghan government, saying that they were committed huge crimes against the Afghan and foreign citizens.
On Friday President Ghani said that had “no authority” under the country’s constitution to release the remaining 400 inmates because of their involvement in serious crimes.
As part of the deal signed between the US and Taliban in Doha, Afghan government was required to release 5000 Taliban prisoners. The Taliban also asked to release 1000 Afghan forces prisoners.
The group has said that has completed release of the prisoners. The Afghan government also confirmed that had freed 4917 Taliban prisoners so far.
