KABUL: The Afghan government has welcomed the European Union’s political commitment to supporting the peace process and Afghanistan self-reliance.
On Friday, the Council of European Union (EU) adopted conclusions reaffirming the bloc’s political commitment to support the Afghans on their path towards peace and prosperity.
The EU said it would condition its future political and financial support to ensure the republican, democratic and values-based principles were protected and promoted.
The conclusions also reiterated the EU’s support for a negotiated political settlement leading to lasting peace and reconciliation, which must build on the democratic and human rights achievements of the past 19 years.
In its conclusions, the Council called on the Taliban to build trust and confidence allowing the prompt start of intra-Afghan negotiations on the basis of the sufficient numbers of prisoners already released.
The Afghan government welcomed the decision of EU’s support for peace and Afghanistan development, said the Presidential Palace in a statement.
The statement said the government praised EU’s continued support for Afghanistan, especially in areas of strengthening democracy, human rights, sustainable development and women’s rights.
“The Afghan government believes that the strategic ties between Afghanistan and EU will continue to strengthen common values and combat common threats,” the statement cited.
