EU supports simultaneous peace, election process

KABUL: Chief Executive of the National Unity Government Dr. Abdullah Abdullah and Gunnar Wiegand, Managing Director of the European External Action Service met at the Spidar Palace and discussed peace and election process in Afghanistan, his office said in a statement Tuesday.
At the meeting, Mr. Gunnar Wiegand said the European Union supports democratic process and timely election process in Afghanistan and calls it in the interest of the Afghan people, said the statement.
“The EU supports the peace efforts in Afghanistan and to reach the goal, a national consensus should be convened. We support a simultaneous peace and election process in Afghanistan,” said the director as quoted by the statement.
Thanking the EU for its support and cooperation with Afghanistan, the Chief Executive of the National Unity Government (NUG), Dr. Abdullah said the EU’s role was effective in the development and strengthening of democracy in the country. The CE said: “We are committed to the holding of a timely, transparent and credible election in Afghanistan, as it can stabilize the country.”
He said the government was using any option for restoring peace in Afghanistan, but the Taliban are still the main hindrance for peace process.
