US envoy Khalilzad begins visit to Pakistan to speed up peace process

US Special Envoy to Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad has kicked off his visit to Islamabad to speed up Afghanistan peace process and end the ongoing war in the country. He is going to visit Afghanistan too.
The US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad will meet with Pakistani officials and it is said that various issues in particular Afghanistan peace process will be discussed.
Khalilzad is the US top diplomat who has fulfilled critical missions in Afghanistan and the region and there is hope that his visit to the region can help end the ongoing war in the country.
According to reports, Khalilzad will lead a delegation to Afghanistan, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia until October 14. The trip is his first visit following his appointment as Special Representative and reflects the Administration’s intent to support, facilitate, and participate in a peace process in Afghanistan.
Khalilzad’s mission is to coordinate and lead US efforts to bring the Taliban to the negotiating table, a statement from US state department said, adding that “He will do so in close coordination with the Afghan government and other stakeholders, exploring how best to reach a negotiated settlement to the conflict.”
Meanwhile, a number of Afghan political experts say Khalilzad should strongly convince Pakistan to sincerely cooperate with Afghanistan government in reaching lasting peace and ending war in the country.
“The situation in Afghanistan is critical and appointment of Zalmay Khalilzad is a good step as his clear position against Pakistan and good relations with Afghan leaders can help speed up the Afghan peace process,” an Afghan political expert Ali Rahmani said.
He stressed that Khalilzad was familiar with diplomacies of Afghanistan and the region and could better differentiate peace-loving policies and policies of those who are supporting terrorist groups, so the US new envoy could play vital role in bringing peace and stability to Afghanistan.
Afghan Senate is also hopeful for Khalilzad’s first visit to the region and considers that he can do better to end the ongoing war in the country.
Afghan senators say Afghans want Khalilzad to clearly discuss all issues that have resulted in continued war in Afghanistan with leaders of regional countries in particular Pakistan.
“The people of Afghanistan are anticipating that Khalilzad can play effective role in ending the current crisis in Afghanistan as he familiarizes with situation in the country,” an Afghan senator Azimi said.
For ending the ongoing imposed war in Afghanistan, peace efforts should be speeded up and ways should be paved for the Taliban group and other groups to join peaceful and legal political settlement. Moreover, the government of Afghanistan should clearly brief all issues regarding peace and war to Khalilzad and the international community so that lasting peace will be maintained in the country.
