Asia Cup 2018: Captain Asghar Afghan says, ‘we are not here to play but to perform’

KABUL: Afghan players have enough experience playing big international matches, captain of the team said ahead of Asia Cup that started in the UAE yesterday.

Afghanistan’s first match in the six-team tournament will be against Sri Lanka on Monday.

“We are not here just to play but to perform. Our players have got enough experience playing big international matches. They have performed well in leading cricket leagues, so we are hopeful of doing well in this tournament as well,” Afghanistan captain Asghar Afghan told ANI.

Afghanistan are 10th in ICC’s ODI team rankings, two places lower than Sri Lanka. The sides have played two ODIs with the latter winning both.

“Sri Lanka is an experienced side. We have had some good matches against them, be it in World Cup, T20 format or one-day matches. We are confident that we can perform well against them,” Afghan said.

The first match of 50-over tournament will be between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Other teams playing in the tournament are defending champions India, Pakistan and Hong Kong.
