Growing youth unemployment requires urgent attention
Afghanistan has been involved in devastating conflicts since almost forty years and due to this reason, large number of youth and teenagers have remained deprive of education. A number of educated youth left the country, took refuge, departed to neighboring and other countries and another number failed inside the country to achieve higher education. Ongoing wars, insecurity and insurgency drew youth to misleading occupations. Unemployment has also challenged our youth even to the educated ones and has created remarkable concern among youth and their partners.
Everyday thousands youth and eligible workforce leave homes in the hope of work but alas and alas! Finding a job is too difficult but these youth put themselves in the hands of fate. There are youths who have to resort to every work to bring food to their families.
In an interview with The Kabul Times reporter, Mokhtar 11 a youth who sells carrot juice on a sidewalk, said, here in capital Kabul unemployment has reached its peak but despite of that people have to work and support their families. As you know, there are no factories to employee all these crowed of unemployed people. I was fed up with unemployment and decided to start this business and sell carrot juice on the roadside.
He added, the number of addicts is increasing in Kabul so I preferred this job despite of hot and cold weather. Although sometimes security officials disturb my business but I continue and am strongly determined to bring a legal livelihood my family.
Daily I purchase four sacks of carrot, from market Afs 250 per sack and clean them by students who are off from school and pay them Afs 40 per sack and produce carrot juice and sell it Afs 10 to 20 per cup and earn Afs 500 every day that meets my house rent and family expenses.
He went on to say some youth, resort to bad actions including begging, robbery, pick pocketing, drugs etc and make themselves a burden on their families’ shoulders. But I prefer this job as well as shoes polishing, selling plastics etc which are honorable jobs and create legal income.
I pray at the court of Allah the Almighty to help me. I expect the government to establish trading companies to employee eligible unemployed people.
Keramuddin 11 and student of 7th grade in one of the Kabul schools, who is involved in carrot cleaning from dawn to evening, said we are eight in our family, my father operate a wheelbarrow but despite of hard work, he fails to earn our house rent of Afs 3000 per month. So I decided to work shoulder to shoulder with him and support him.
I clean two sacks of carrots per day and receive Afs 80. I expect to attend winter courses and deal with my lessons, but due to economic problems I fail.
Jamshed another student of 7th grade said, I and my father clean four sacks of carrot every day and earn Afs 40 per sack and support our family.
Answering a question he said, Human being naturally has many requests.
They want to be rich and enjoy all modern equipment, cars etc. but I am satisfied with less income.
I want to tolerate hardships but complete my higher educations and ultimately achieve my goals.
According to official data, youths constitute over 70 pc of Afghanistan population, if investment take place on them, they would play constructive role in the future of the country.
