In a workshop held recently, minister of refugees and repatriations, SayedHussainAlimiBalkhi said the number of Afghan refugees in foreign countries reaches to 5.5 million.
He added immigration has started since 1357, during which millions of our people have sought refuge in foreign countries.
Calling refugees’ role key in Afghan people economy, he said over the last four decades and in consider with unemployment rate which has faced the government and nation with great economic problems, the Afghan refugees are doing their best to financially support their households here.
Touching on negotiations took place with Iran and Pakistan, he said we have talked with these two neighboring countries to legally extend the Afghan refugees residence and those who lack residence documents should be provided with residence cards.
Based on this, Pakistan has started registration of Afghan refugees since July, as 270,000 Afghans has so far received the residence cards, he went on to say.
He said negotiations were also underway with Iran, as earlier, both sides reached a primary agreement, based on which, those who don’t have residence cards should be registered to benefit the process.
A meeting would be held in near future in Turkey and attended by Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran and UNHCR, during which variety of issues on Afghan refugees would be discussed, he continued.
He said his ministry was making effort to prevent illegal immigrations by holding awareness programs.
Calling media role, particularly on immigrants and repatriates key, he also asked them to support the refugees’ rights.
The law on prevention of human trafficking has been approved last year, and work on it is seriously going on, he pointed out.
Afghan refugees in Iran and Pakistan constitute the largest and most protracted refugee population under UNHCR’s mandate.
The majority have been resident in both countries since fleeing the Soviet War in Afghanistan during the 1980s.
Despite the success of voluntary repatriation programs both in Pakistan and Iran, many Afghan refugees have specific needs, vulnerabilities and protection concerns that prevent their return.
In addition, the volatile security situation and human rights violations in Afghanistan remain an ongoing concern.
