US, China joint counter terrorism effort
Both the US and Chinese presidents have been committed to cooperation with each other in Afghanistan and working jointly in counter terrorist effort in the country.
Donald Trump and Xi Jinping in a meeting in Bejing said that both countries were committed to working toward a peaceful future in Afghanistan. The US President Donald Trump said that U.S. and China would focus strongly on fighting terrorism and drug trafficking.
Currently, Afghanistan is in the frontline of terrorism and extremism. In consideration to modality of reformation of security formula in the region, all terrorist groups as Daesh, al Qaeda and others are trying to reach China territory.
Trump has spoken about working towards a peaceful future and joint counter terrorism effort and drug trafficking of Washington and Beijing in Afghanistan at a time when Afghanistan is known as the biggest producer of poppy in the world and witnesses increasing violence and terrorist groups. Trump said that terrorists are a threat to all humanity and that he and Xi will stop radical Islamic terrorism.
U.S. considers China’s old and strong partner Pakistan as safe haven of terrorists operating and creating violence in Afghanistan, but China has always in reaction to vision of the US officials praised Pakistan for its sacrifices and works in counter terrorism effort.
Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed on cooperation with the US about regional issues including Afghanistan.
“We have agreed to further expand our cooperation in economy, commerce as well as cooperation in Afghanistan and world and regional issues,” Xi added.
The Department of Asian Affairs for Foreign Ministry of China has recently informed of Beijing’s readiness for paving peace facilities between Afghanistan and Taliban. Previously, Zalmy Khalilzad, US former ambassador to Iraq and Afghanistan had said if China wanted peace, stability and end of war in Afghanistan, the only way was to put pressure on Pakistan.
Trump’s remarks assume significance after he unveiled his new South Asia policy under which the US has warned Pakistan against providing safe harbor to terrorist groups. Trump’s South Asia policy giving importance to India and inviting New Delhi to play a bigger role in reconstruction of Afghanistan has also raised eyebrows in Beijing and Islamabad. Pakistan has disagreed with the US new policy for Afghanistan and South Asia and considered it as impractical.
Both countries are two key sides of quadrilateral talks for peace in Afghanistan. The other two sides are Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The Quadrilateral Coordination Group session was held and resumed last month in Oman where representatives of Afghanistan, Pakistan, US and China participated and the session also ended with no result.
Now, Afghanistan will really reach to peace and stability depends on actions to be taken now by Beijing, Islamabad and Taliban.
It is wroth mentioning that China was one of key partners of Afghanistan and has provided economical and cultural assistance to the country. Chinese have mostly helped and focused on economic sector, invested on Afghanistan copper, iron and coal mines and is interested in investment in other big economic projects as Silk Road, TAPI and gas.
