SOM increases optimism over Afghanistan future
After Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) held in Kabul with participation of representatives of more than 40 world countries, experts and civil society representatives in interviews with The Kabul Times correspondent by considering the meeting as significant for Afghanistan said that the results of SOM meeting have increased optimism for the future of Afghanistan.
Besides increasing of optimism for the future of Afghanistan, SOM meeting has put more responsibilities on shoulder of national unity government in order to make further efforts for implementation of its commitments to the international community and absorption of further assistance to Afghanistan.
Javed Kohistani, an Afghan political expert has said that commitments pledged by the international community at SOM meeting have increased hopes among the people of Afghanistan.
“Previously trust on national unity government had reached to lowest level, but contentment of the international community in SOM meeting has given new confidence to the government; therefore, Afghanistan government should seriously follow its achievements and put anti-corruption effort on its top working priority so that it can further attract trust of the international community,” Kohistani added.
Related to holding of SOM meeting, a university lecturer Anwari said, “National unity government should keep trust of the international community and it is very effective in all political, economic, national and international sectors as holding SOM meeting has given a clear message to the regional countries that the world now pays inclusive attention to Afghanistan.”
Javed Farahmand, a civil society activist has told The Kabul Times correspondent that the international community should fully support the people of Afghanistan and government until the country stood on its feet and reached self-sufficiency, adding that the international community should further focus on peace and stability in Afghanistan because challenges and problems would not be solved without maintaining peace in the country.
“Security and economic situations has deteriorated comparing to previous years. Moreover, poverty has increased, narcotics and corruption have put negative impacts on life of the people and the national unity government has not abided by its commitments pledged to the nation,” said Farahmand.
According to Afghanistan Civil Society Federation, billions of dollars assistance provided by the international community in the past 16 years has not healed the pain of Afghanistan people; therefore, from now on, all assistance provided by the international community should be spent with full transparency and the national unity government is obliged to be responsive to the people for spending the assistance.
In SOM meeting, the international community commitments to Kabul will continue till 2030, according to ministry of finance.
It is worth mentioning that at the Brussels Summit held on Afghanistan on 5 October 2016, Afghanistan government pledged to the international community to make sure that it would carry out reforms including the registration of assets by government officials, the finalization of the procurement law, the undertaking of systematic reforms in the election law, fighting corruption, reforms within legal and judicial institutions and ensuring the security of investors and investments.
