Empowering teachers help prevents extremism
Held annually on 5th October since 1994, World Teachers’ Day is celebrated worldwide and brings together governments, multi- and bilateral organizations, NGOs, private sectors, teachers and experts in the field of teaching.
World Teachers’ Day 2017 will be celebrated under the theme “Teaching in Freedom, Empowering Teachers”, echoing the 2015 theme that followed the adoption of the new Sustainable Development Goals in September 2015, when teacher empowerment was reaffirmed as a top priority in all education and development strategies.
According to UNESCO, World Teachers’ Day represents a significant token of the awareness, understanding and appreciation displayed for the vital contribution that teachers make to education and development. Education International (EI), the global union federation that represents education professionals worldwide, strongly believes that World Teachers’ Day should be internationally recognized and celebrated around the world.
Indeed the teachers in a society can rightly be considered as the builders of a nation because of the important role that they play. They disseminate education and support the young generation in building their characters, personalities and minds. They guide the students through a very important phase of their lives, which can decide their whole future; whether they become well-educated and positive members of the society or they remain illiterate and have negative impact over the society largely depends on the way they are educated by their teachers.
No education system is better than its teachers. Teachers are the custodians of learning; they impart knowledge, values and skills; at their best, they tap into the hopes and talents of young people and help them to grow into productive citizens.
In Afghanistan, apart from the official celebratory events, there is no wider public awareness about the role of teachers in society. Despite the fact that traditionally, teachers have a high position of esteem theoretically due to religious and cultural significance emphasized, but practically teachers are one of the most neglected professionals in the country, who get the least of salary and social respect.
Having low salaries, lack of teaching materials and no respectful profession, teachers too do not teach with an enthusiasm and zeal of a professional teacher. They take it for the sake of job and a financial support, thus the entire system doesn’t go very well.
Meanwhile the old teaching methods and unprofessional teachers have been also considered to be the great challenges before the country’s education system. Since Afghanistan has passed several decades of devastating war, the government must ensure that teachers are well prepared and well supported. Without qualified teachers, there is no quality education. Pre-service and in-service training are crucial, as are good working conditions, commensurate remuneration and adequate career development opportunities.
The country’s teachers themselves too have a responsibility to create safe and conducive environments for students to thrive. The country faces spreading threats from the terrorists and extremists, where the teachers as the powerful models of tolerance can raise awareness on such threats and mobilize the nation, in particular the students against such ugly phenomenon.
The Government leaders as promised during the election campaigns should also pay serious attention to education sector in general and the plight of teachers in particular. Peace and stability laying on education, and reformation of the system should be a top priority agenda.
