Afghanistan successfully moving towards development
Representatives from government of Afghanistan, civil society and from the international community met in Kabul on Wednesday and Thursday to discuss “progress and achievements of Afghanistan since the commitments made during the last year’s Brussels conference. In Brussels, new development assistance pledges through 2020 were made, following the London Conference in 2014 and the last Senior Officials Meeting in Kabul in 2015.
President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani officially opened the “2017 Senior Officials Meeting” and Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah Abdullah offered the closing remarks.  The meeting was held for two days. The first session discussed women’s empowerment, state of the Afghan economy, and infrastructures development and the second session discussed enabling private sector, implementation of priorities and challenges moving toward 2020, governance, reforming state institutions and anti-corruption, achievements and priorities of Afghan government and international community.
“Today’s meeting is part of a larger conversation about how Afghanistan be an effective partner with the international community to build a better future for our children, a future that is free from terrorism and violence,” said President Ghani. The president also pledged Afghanistan’s unwavering commitment to ending corruption. “We recently endorsed a highly pragmatic but we believe very realistic national anti-corruption strategy that is already being put into practice,” he added.
Meanwhile Dr. Abdullah said supporting the private sector and encouraging domestic and foreign investment through strategic incentives and a friendlier environment were important pillars of Afghanistan’s growth strategy. “To get to these goals, we have to overcome reform implementation challenges and remove impediments,” he said.
Immediately after its inauguration, the National Unity government set out to address with the inherited fiscal crisis that threatened the stability of the system and fight the endemic corruption as its top most priorities.
The National Unity Government has had incredible and tremendous accomplishments since its establishment in 2014.  Regional and international allies and partners of Afghanistan including the United States, NATO, European Union, countries in the region and World Bank announced their long term financial, civilian and military support to Afghanistan.
Focusing on economic efforts at national and regional level, taking serious steps against corruption, adopting clear stance toward the enemies of Afghanistan, and establishing strong relationships with international allies and partners, can be considered as the major areas of importance for Afghanistan.  Because of a clear and strong diplomacy, Afghanistan is once again the focus the international community.
In the recent Senior Officials Meeting, the international community called the discussion with Afghan government as fruitful, saying the government was able to fulfill most of its commitments before the international donors.
Meanwhile the meeting said the progress that Afghanistan has made despite many problems and challenges were of immense pleasure for the international community and the country is successfully moving towards developments.
It is worth mentioning that the international community based on the experiences of last sixteen years and experiences from other countries, must do more to help Afghanistan reach self-reliance and be able to should most of its financial issues independently.
Holding of such meetings and reviewing of the government’s commitments would further bring transparency in expenditure of the international aids as well as the Afghan government would win the trust of the international community and donor organizations.
