Public support essential to eradicate polio virus in Afghanistan
Around 9.9 million children under the age of 5 will be vaccinated this week during the fourth round of polio National Immunization Days of this year. Around 5.9 million children aged 2-5 years will also be given Albendazole deworming tablets. Supported by WHO and UNICEF, the campaign will run from 25-29 September in all provinces of Afghanistan.
The drive will also target the children in those provinces bordering Pakistan, in particular eastern Nangarhar province. Since there is no positive case of polio detected over the past two years in this province, but the risk has increased as people frequently travel through Nangarhar to Pakistan.
Frequent movements of people through Nangarhar to Pakistan is an issue that has raised concerns about the prevalence of polio virus in the province, according to health official. Although no case had been registered over the past two years, there were concerns children could contract the virus, if left out of the vaccination campaign.
Public health officials expressing the views during the launch of an anti-polio campaign in the eastern zone on Monday, said 9,000 children were still deprived of polio drops in Nangarhar province, as security threats remain the biggest challenge before the vaccinators.
Polio is one of the most drastic diseases that cannot be easily cured once a person falls victim to it. But luckily it is one of the diseases that have their cure in the form of vaccines given to the children before the age of 5 which makes sure that the child will never get infected in his or her lifetime.
Afghanistan is one of four countries still suffering from active transmission of the polio virus. Although polio cases decreased after 2001, with only four cases reported in 2004, the deteriorating security situation has been accompanied by a rise in infection. Major challenges in the south and eastern provinces, such as safety concerns for vaccinators and monitors, a climate of fear, and frequent population movement between polio-endemic areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan, make accessing and vaccinating at-risk children difficult.
Last campaign was also launched with reports that the bordering areas were getting affected due to the transition of polio virus from across the border in Pakistan, as Pakistani Taliban denied all the attempts of carrying out any campaign against polio and large numbers of cases were recorded in these areas. After the Pakistani government launched the military operation against militants, hundreds of families fled the area and took refuge in Afghanistan and same fears of polio transition were present at the bordering areas.
In the last campaign, the help of religious scholars and clerics were sought for encouraging the people to get their children vaccinated because due to propagation of Taliban, anti-polio perceptions are present in some tribal and far-flung areas of the country. The strategy was successful when no resistance was recorded by anyone in the campaign.  However, no such help of religious scholars has been sought this time.
Meanwhile, the country’s mass media should bear the responsibility on informing the people for successful implementation of the anti-polio campaign as well as they raise public awareness programs on the benefits of the anti-polio vaccine.

The supercharged battery lasts up to two hours longer than the battery on the iPhone 7〞all the juice you need to run your shot-tracking and scoring apps. And no need to stress about losing power when you squeeze in another nine.
