Women’s crucial role in peace process
Empowering women and girls are much important to have their active participation in different spheres of life and help realize Afghanistan’s full potential. Women and girls having variety of roles in the home, society and nation which are essential for the promotion of peace and stability in the war-torn country.
Afghanistan’s Women rights activists have continuously demanded to be full participants in peace talks, as stated in the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 and other resolutions. The National Unity Government led by President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah Abdullah has assured that women will be considered in all spheres.
This is while, women from across the country gathered on Monday in Kabul to discuss their experiences, vision and contribution to peace in the country at the Fourth Kabul Symposium “Afghan Women; Messengers of Peace” hosted by First Lady, Rula Ghani.
Addressing the ceremony, the president said the number of women deprived of literacy in Afghanistan was three times more than men, calling imposed war the main reason behind it. According to president, the women were the real defenders of peace.
Indeed the women’s literacy rate difference in urban and rural areas is due to several factors, including security problems, lack of schools and universities in remote areas, long distance to schools and low demand for literacy in particular for women due to traditional barriers.
Education is the best way to give women and girls the freedom from male domination and investing on girls’ education is very important to address their  needs and concerns as well as human rights. The only way to ensure women’s rights in Afghanistan and to truly empower women in the long run is possible  through offering primary, secondary, and higher education that will foster literacy, open thinking and knowledge of international human rights standards.
Any sort of violence and discrimination against women and girls must be dealt with strict measures. The justice and judiciary system must never let the culprits get away unpunished. In addition, the socio-political and socio-economic circumstances must be amended in such a way that women and girls should have their deserving role and rights. Even Islam does not prohibit the participation of women in social and political lives and ensures that they get their deserving position.
At present, the peace process is believed to bae very important as war is getting stretched.  Though negotiations have not been able to play a decisive role in guaranteeing peace, it may have some impact on future developments regarding peace and tranquility. For a reliable and lasting peace, Afghan authorities have to make sure that it should be inclusive and must include all stakeholders.
The UN and other international organizations have encouraged the government of Afghanistan to do its best in empowerment of women and ease women participation in peace talks. These agencies have earlier vowed to support government’s efforts to strengthen the implementation of women peace and security commitments in compliance with Afghanistan’s international obligations, and Afghanistan’s National Action Plan on UN Security Council Resolution 1325.
